Tallulah was founded in 1857 and was the site of numerous Civil War battles and maneuvers, such as a major Union victory over Confederate forces after capturing supply chains and destroying railroads as they marched down from Lake Providence. After the war, Tallulah remained a largely agricultural city and became a major player in the region's commerce, a role it still holds to this day.

Also nearby is the historic Tensas National Wildlife Refuge, the birthplace of the term "Teddy Bear." It was here that President Theodore Roosevelt was settling a land dispute and went out for a day of hunting. It's still debated if he did or did not shoot the bear that surprised him, but that's not why we still remember the dangerous run-in; the famous political cartoon depicting the ursine encounter was the first instance of the term "Teddy Bear." Visiting Tensas today, you'll see over 400 species of mammals, birds, reptiles, and amphibians, from black bears to alligators, making it definitely worth the trip!
